Before making efforts to get rid of wrinkles it is interesting to know what causes wrinkles. Several factors that cause wrinkles are discussed below on this page. WHAT CAUSES WRINKLES
What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles could be caused by various factors. Some of such factors are...
Aging is a natural process of human life. Every individual passes through this process. And wrinkling is a natural result of the aging process. The major changes that take place during the process of wrinkling are... In this process the division of the skin cells becomes slow and the inner skin (the dermis), starts to thin. The fat cells beneath the dermis begin to atrophy. At the same time the underlying network of elastin and collagen fibers that provides scaffolding for the surface layers, loosens and unravels. With the growing age skin loses its elasticity. Therefore when pressed, it no longer springs back to its initial position but instead sags and forms furrows. The skins ability to retain moisture diminishes because the sweat and oil-secreting glands atrophy. This deprives the skin of their protective water-lipid emulsions. As a consequence, the skin becomes dry and scaly. In addition, the ability of the skin to repair itself diminishes with age, so wounds are slower to heal in the old age. In the process of wrinkling the frown lines (those between the eyebrows) and crows feet (lines that radiate from the corners of the eyes) appear to develop because of persistent small muscle contractions. The habitual facial expressions also form characteristic lines on the skin. Gravity is yet another factor, which exacerbates the situation and thus contributes to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids. The Eyebrows, surprisingly, move up as a person ages. It possibly happens because of the forehead wrinkles. Damage By Sun Exposure (Photo Ageing) The sunlight and the sunrays are another significant factors, which can leave a negative effect on the skin, which could further cause wrinkling of the skin. Therefore the role of the sun cannot be underestimated as a cause behind the ageing skin, skin cancers and other skin problems. The prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation emanating from the sun (called extrinsic or photoageing) can also cause the skin age prematurely. The frequent exposure to the ultraviolet rays (referred to as UVA or UVB) radiating from the sunlight accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin ageing. And most of these effects start appearing by the age of 20. In fact both the UVA and the UVB rays of sun cause damage to the skin, and lead to wrinkles, lower immunity against infection, ageing skin disorders and even skin cancer. Even small amounts of the Ultraviolet radiation can damage the collagen fibers (the major structural protein in the skin) and thus cause accumulation of abnormal elastin (the protein that causes tissues to stretch). Large amounts of enzymes called metalloproteinases are produced in response to this sun-induced elastin accumulation. Normally the function of these metalloproteinases enzymes is to remodel the sun-injured tissues of the skin by synthesizing and reforming collagen. They are also likely to have factors that protect the skin against the melanoma (although this is not clear). However this is an imperfect process because in order to achieve it some of these enzymes actually degrade the collagen. And the result is an uneven formation (matrix) of disorganized collagen fibers called solar scars. If this process of skin rebuilding occurs over and over, wrinkles result. Other Factors Other factors that cause wrinkling to the skin include, smoking and several environmental factors such as cigarette smoke and various air pollutants present in the atmosphere as a result of pollution.
