WHAT IS HIGHLIGHTING AND LOW LIGHTING

Highlighting and low lighting are just another way to color your hair. Both these processes can be used together or individually to give you a new look. Highlighting your hair would lighten and brighten your locks; where as low lightening will darken and deepen your locks.

Highlighting

Points to be kept in mind:
  • Take thick or small strands of hair. Color the strands at least two shades lighter than your normal hair color. The hair color should compliment with your natural color.
  • Limit your coloring to only three or four shades lighter. If you skip to more than four shades, your hair will give a harsh and unnatural look.
  • Wash your hair consecutively for two days, before you get highlighting done on your hair. Do not wash hair on the day you highlight your hair.
  • Before buying the color, do check on the expiry date.
  • Once the color is opened and mixed, use it instantly.
  • Start applying the highlighting color from the back of your head to forward. This would avoid smearing and give better results.
  • There are four types of highlighting: basic foil highlights, bialiage or 'hair painting', chunking or 'piecing' & low lighting. Decide which one would you like to go for.
Low lighting

Points to be kept in mind:
  • Take think or small strands of hair and color them at least two shades darker than your normal hair color.
  • Get low lighting done on your hair after three times of consecutive highlighting.
  • Limit your coloring to only three or four shades darker. If you skip to more than four shades, your hair will give a harsh and unnatural look.
  • If your skin gets stained due to color, rub the area with a cotton soaked in alcohol based toner.
