As children grow up and move from your lap to their own seat in the car, they might get uncomfortable and start resisting car seats. They might feel suffocated due to lack of space and being unable to see through the window maybe because of their short height. They could also resist the seat belt due to the same reason. Seat belt however is very necessary and you should not compromise on that just to feel your child more comfortable.
The measures that you can take though can be the following;
A seat belt is extremely important as maximum number of trauma injuries happen due to not wearing a seat belt. You should set an example by yourself strictly adhering to the belt. Don't even casually mention amongst yourselves also that you do not like it as then your children will also take encouragement from that. Let your child compare his sitting arrangement with yours and point out that it is exactly the same. That is, you are also wearing a belt just like his. Make seatbelt a habit since the first time your child sits on his own in the car and refuse to move without it. Encourage and praise your child every time that he sits without making a noise about the belt throughout the ride. If your child is sitting nicely with the safety belt, do not ignore him. Make sure to let him know you have noticed that he has managed very well with the belt. The most important thing to remember is to be consistent with this rule. It should not be that one day you are insisting on the belt and at other times you forget about it. The child will not take the rule seriously and might try ways to make you forget about it often. Enforce the rule by stopping the car each time he gets out of his belt or seat. Make it loud and clear that the car will only move once they are safely tucked in. You could also try diverting your child's attention from the discomfort of the belt by singing songs, or playing other verbal games. The thing that you should not do at any cost is obviously remove the safety belt. If nothing else works and your child goes on protesting, then simply tell him that it will not help and he will have to sit in the belt. After that stop listening to his whining and just be strict. It is for the good of your own child and sooner or later he will learn to adjust and stick to the habit for life long. |
