Excellent homemade soup with split peas or lentils, carrot, onion, bacon rinds, celery, margarine and turnip.

Split Pea And Lentil Soup Recipe

Ingredients:
1/2 lb. Split peas or lentils
1 onion
small carrot
small turnip
bacon rinds to flavour
a few outer leaves of celery
1 oz. butter or margarine
1 1/2 pints water
1/4 pint milk
salt and pepper

How to make {actual-title}:
  • Wash and soak the dried peas or lentils overnight in the cold water.
  • Next day, bring to the boil with the cut up bacon rinds and simmer for 1 hour.
  • Wash, peel and rinds and simmer for 1 hour.
  • Wash, peel and slice the vegetables and add, cooking until they are soft.
  • Put through a sieve, or mash with a wooden spoon.
  • Replace in the saucepan with the milk, reheat, stirring all the time.
  • Put in the margarine or butter and pepper and salt and serve.
  • If water from ham or bacon boiling is used, omit salt.
